Waterloo Biofilter® Wastewater Treatment by Canadian Shield Consultants Agency

Canadian Shield Consultants Agency (CSCA) offers the Waterloo Biofilter®, a patented aerobic trickle-filter wastewater treatment system designed for residential, industrial, and municipal applications across Ontario. This innovative system provides high-efficiency wastewater treatment while minimizing environmental impact and maintaining the natural landscape.

How the Waterloo Biofilter® Works

The Waterloo Biofilter® uses an advanced synthetic filter medium to treat wastewater biologically. Wastewater is sprayed intermittently over the filter medium, allowing it to drain by gravity while a naturally occurring microbial biomass develops within the medium. This biomass oxidizes organic material and nitrifies ammonia, effectively treating wastewater with high efficiency.

Because the filter medium is contained within a tank, the system performs reliably under all soil types, drainage conditions, and cold climates, outperforming conventional sand filters or soil-based systems. The Waterloo Biofilter® can handle flows from less than 1,000 L/day up to more than 300,000 L/day (250 to 90,000 gal/day), making it ideal for a wide range of applications.

Key Benefits of the Waterloo Biofilter®

  • High Treatment Efficiency: Removes 90–95% BOD, 85–98% TSS, 20–50% total nitrogen, and 90–99% coliform bacteria.

  • Compact and Environmentally Friendly: Minimizes footprint, preserves waterfronts and landscapes, and reduces the need for extensive tile beds.

  • Versatile Applications: Suitable for residential, communal, and industrial sites, including campgrounds, resorts, subdivisions, municipal wastewater, food processing wastewater, and landfill leachate treatment.

  • Scalable Design: Easily adapted for different flows by adding modules or increasing medium depth.

  • Low Maintenance & Reliable: Primarily passive operation, easy to operate, and effective in cold weather (-40°C) or seasonal operation.

  • Regulatory Acceptance: Proven technology approved by regulators and health departments in Canada and the U.S.

Industrial and Municipal Applications

The Waterloo Biofilter® is ideal for advanced wastewater treatment and polishing, including:

  • On-site treatment and disposal of landfill leachate

  • Sewage lagoon effluent polishing

  • Nitrification and polishing of municipal wastewater

  • Food processing wastewater treatment

  • Reducing BOD5 levels in industrial sewer discharges

Why choose a Waterloo Biofilter system over a traditional septic system?

The Waterloo Biofilter provides several key advantages over conventional septic systems:

  • Superior treatment quality and effluent clarity

  • Compact footprint — perfect for small or challenging sites

  • Energy-efficient operation with minimal mechanical parts

  • Extended lifespan and reduced maintenance costs

  • Full compliance with Ontario Building Code Part 8 for onsite sewage systems

Canadian Shield Consulting Agency installs Waterloo Biofilter systems that meet local health unit and MECP standards across Ontario.

How does the Waterloo Biofilter system work?

The Waterloo Biofilter treats wastewater through a biological filtration process. After solids are settled in a septic or primary tank, the liquid effluent is distributed through the biofilter, where microorganisms break down organic pollutants and nutrients. The treated water then passes through a final polishing stage before being safely discharged into the environment.
This low-energy, low-maintenance system is ideal for Ontario’s varying soil and climate conditions.

What is the Waterloo Biofilter system?

The Waterloo Biofilter is an advanced onsite wastewater treatment system that uses a biological filtration process to treat domestic sewage safely and efficiently. Instead of relying on mechanical aeration or chemical disinfection, the system uses a proprietary filter medium that supports natural microbial growth to remove contaminants.
At Canadian Shield Consulting Agency, we design, install, and maintain Waterloo Biofilter systems across Ontario for residential, commercial, and municipal applications.
